چکیده

Strong and predictable environmental variability can reward flexible behaviors among animals. We used long-term records of activity data that cover several lunar cycles to investigate whether behavior at-sea of swallow-tailed gulls Creagrus furcatus, a nocturnal pelagic seabird, varied with lunar phase in the Galápagos Islands. A Bayesian hierarchical model showed that nighttime at-sea activity of 37 breeding swallow-tailed gulls was clearly associated with changes in moon phase. Proportion of nighttime spent on water was highest during darker periods of the lunar cycle, coinciding with the cycle of the diel vertical migration (DVM) that brings prey to the sea surface at night. Our data show that at-sea behavior of a tropical seabird can vary with environmental changes, including lunar phase.

Combined Use of GPS and Accelerometry Reveals Fine Scale Three-Dimensional Foraging Behaviour in the Short-Tailed Shearwater

Determining the foraging behaviour of free-ranging marine animals is fundamental for assessing their habitat use and how they may respond to changes in the environment. However, despite recent advances in bio-logging technology, collecting information on both at-sea movement patterns and activity budgets still remains difficult in small pelagic seabird species due to the constraints of instrume...

CLIFF-NESTING ADAPTATIONS OF THE GALiPAGOS SWALLOW-TAILED GULL1

E CULLEN (1957) showed that the cliff-nesting Black-legged Kittiwake (Larus (Rissa) tridactylus) differs from “typical” (i.e., ground-nesting)‘ gulls in many respects. The species’ unique morphological and behavioral characters, Cullen cogently argued, have resulted from adaptation (either directly or indirectly) to cliff-breeding. Epistemologically, the correlation between cliff-nesting and un...

Seabird community structure in a coastal tropical environment: importance of natural factors and fish aggregating devices (FADs)

In tropical waters, productivity is low and seabirds only feed at the surface, often in association with sub-surface predators. We studied the distribution and abundance of seabirds in the coastal marine environment around Réunion Island, SW Indian Ocean, between February 2001 and October 2002. We investigated the distribution and abundance of birds at sea with respect to the effects of natural...

Modelling Terrestrial and Marine Foraging Habitats in Breeding Audouin's Gulls Larus audouinii: Timing Matters

Although the breeding ecology of Audouin's gull has been widely studied, its spatial distribution patterns have received little attention. We assessed the foraging movements of 36 GPS-tracked adult Audouin's gulls breeding at the Ebro Delta (NW Mediterranean), coinciding with the incubation period (May 2011). This also coincided with a trawling moratorium northwards from the colony. We modelled...

Temporal patterns of target catch and sea turtle bycatch in the US Atlantic pelagic longline fishing fleet

Sea turtle bycatch in pelagic longline fishing gear is an ongoing threat to the conservation of sea turtle populations. However, these bycatch events do not occur uniformly in space or time. Leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea) and loggerhead (Caretta caretta) bycatch rates reported in large fishing regions exhibited different degrees of interannual variability. Target catch and sea turtle bycatc...
